The fire broke out at about 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 at the Horticultural Farm property at Rutgers Gardens, according to a university spokeswoman.
The building was unoccupied at the time, she said.
The fire was contained to the barn with assistance from local fire departments.
One firefighter received treatment at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the spokeswoman said.
Rutgers Gardens spans 180 acres off of Route 1. The farm conducts research in the science of fruits and vegetables. It also contains ornamental plants.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
